Understanding Packaging Barrier Properties: A Complete Guide

What Are Barrier Properties?
Barrier properties define how well a packaging material resists the transmission of gases, moisture, light, and aromas. For food and beverage brands, choosing the right barrier level is the single most important technical decision in packaging — it directly determines shelf life, product safety, and consumer satisfaction.
Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR)
OTR measures how much oxygen passes through a material per unit area per day (cc/m²/day). For oxygen-sensitive products like coffee, nuts, and cured meats, you need an OTR below 1 cc/m²/day. High-barrier foil laminates (PET/AL/PE) achieve OTR values near zero. For less sensitive products like dry snacks, a moderate barrier (OTR 10–50) may be sufficient and more cost-effective.
Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR)
MVTR measures how much water vapor passes through the material (g/m²/day). Products like crackers, cereals, and powders require low MVTR to prevent moisture absorption and maintain crispness. Foil-based structures offer excellent moisture barriers, while kraft paper laminates provide moderate protection suitable for many dry goods.
Light Barrier
UV and visible light accelerate oxidation and degrade flavor compounds, vitamins, and color in many products. Opaque foil laminates provide complete light blocking. For products where visual appeal is important — like colorful candies or fresh herbs — clear films with UV-blocking additives offer a compromise between visibility and protection.
Choosing the Right Barrier for Your Product
Match your barrier level to your product's actual sensitivity and target shelf life. Over-specifying barrier (e.g., using expensive foil for a product that doesn't need it) increases cost unnecessarily. Under-specifying leads to quality failures and returns. Our packaging specialists can help you select the optimal material structure based on your product's specific requirements and shelf life targets.
Common Material Structures and Their Barrier Levels
PET/AL/PE offers the highest barrier for oxygen, moisture, and light — ideal for coffee, meat snacks, and pharmaceuticals. OPP/PE provides moderate barrier at lower cost, suitable for dry snacks and confectionery. Kraft/PE combines a natural aesthetic with moderate moisture protection, popular for premium food brands. All-PE mono-material structures offer good barrier with the added benefit of recyclability, making them the sustainable choice for many applications.
